CLOSER / ŠRÁMY 3
ŠRÁMY is a Cie Pieds Perchés's research in 3 parts which deals with intergenerational trauma and asks how violence and pain is transferred through generations and become embodied memories. the first part is called Šrámy/ la débattue and the second ŠRÁMY / DĚTI Z BAKELITU. The show "Closer" is the Third part of this project.
In "Closer", the main performer Marina Mezzogiorno-Brown, who was born in LA in 1988, asks these questions: Who lives inside us? How do the people we love inhabit our skin once they are gone? What do we show and what do we hide? How does hiding protect us, how can it endanger us?
She is looking at these questions through the lens of disco and liberation and unspeakable loss in the LA gay community (and her own life) during the beginning of the AIDS pandemic. She connects this greater, collective loss to her many personal experiences with death. Drawing on the powerful visual world of 70s and 80s club life, she explores that historic moment of freedom and new-found open expression of queer love, and the crosshairs of shame, fear, and grief that AIDS caught everyone in. The necessity for visibility—invisibility equalling death—changed our world. Who are the missing ones? How do they live inside us? How do we remember them with all the joy they bring us?
“Closer” explores loss, and the visible and invisible forces within our relationships. It draws on costume, new circus, aerial rope, physical theatre, and oral history interviews to weave a story of love, tragedy, and the ultimate healing power of remembrance—and clubbing.
